Podcasting / audio production

Podcasts are made by mic technique and room treatment, not by the microphone brand. Get within a fist of the mic and treat the wall behind you.

Podcast microphone

Dynamic microphones can reduce sensitivity to distant room sound when used close to the speaker, but microphone pattern, placement, gain, and room acoustics still determine the result.

Audio interface

Preamp gain and clean monitoring matter more than channel count for one or two mics.

Mic arm / mount

A boom arm gets the mic close to your mouth without eating desk space.

Monitor headphones

Closed-back cans for tracking, open-back for editing/mixing.

Studio monitors / headphones

Nearfield monitors reveal problems headphones hide. Pick around the room.

Room treatment

Absorb early reflections at first, then bass-trap the corners. Foam alone is a myth.

Portable recorder / backup

A field recorder saves the day when the interface dies mid-record.

Webcam

Optional. Podcasts on YouTube need at least the C920x.

Key light

Only if you're shooting video. Even one soft key beats overhead room lights.

Power + cable management

A quiet UPS keeps mics + interface from popping during power dips.
