Step 01

Determine whether the problem is wheel feel or missing scroll input.

If the wheel switches between ratchet and free-spin unexpectedly, check the mode-shift button and SmartShift first. If the wheel turns but no application scrolls, test software/connection state. If the wheel physically binds or grinds, stop forcing it and inspect for external debris.

Step 02

Check SmartShift and app-specific assignments in Logi Options+.

Logitech documents that the mode-shift button and wheel behavior can be customized and that settings can differ by application. Temporarily test with a simple/default profile and multiple applications before changing firmware or replacing hardware.

Step 03

Reconnect the mouse and test both connection paths if available.

If you use Bluetooth, forget and re-pair the mouse. If you use Logi Bolt, reseat the receiver and try another supported USB port. A connection problem can affect more than the wheel, so note whether pointer movement and buttons remain stable.

Step 04

Clean only the way Logitech documents.

Logitech’s MX Master 3S support page recommends a 70% isopropyl alcohol / 30% water solution for cleaning the device exterior. It does not document inserting toothpicks or other tools into the MagSpeed assembly. If debris is inside the mechanism and cannot be removed without disassembly, use Logitech support rather than improvising around the wheel.

Step 05

Test another computer before calling it a mouse fault.

Use another supported host with default mouse behavior. If the same wheel failure follows the mouse across hosts and applications after connection/settings checks, hardware becomes more likely. If it disappears, stay on the original computer and troubleshoot software/profile state.

Decision

Do you need another mouse?

No

If mode, SmartShift, app profiles, or re-pairing fixes it, keep the mouse.

Support first

If the wheel is physically abnormal or produces no scroll input across hosts, contact Logitech before attempting an internal repair.

Replacement

If Logitech confirms a hardware fault and service is not practical, then replacement is the appropriate buying decision.
