Step 01

Read the laptop manufacturer’s input requirement.

Search the exact model or service tag on the manufacturer support site. Look for the AC adapter specification, USB-C Power Delivery limit, and whether different hardware configurations ship with different adapters. A discrete-GPU configuration can have a different full-load requirement from a low-power configuration in the same product family.

USB-C

USB-C charging is negotiated end to end.

A USB-C connector does not guarantee that the port accepts charging, and a charger’s large wattage number does not guarantee that the exact port can deliver that wattage to your laptop. The source, cable, laptop port, and laptop must negotiate a compatible USB Power Delivery profile.

  • Confirm the laptop port is documented for USB-C charging/Power Delivery.
  • Check the charger’s output table for the exact USB-C port you will use.
  • Use a cable whose documented power rating covers the required current.
  • On multi-port chargers, check the output allocation when other ports are active.

Barrel / proprietary connectors

Matching watts is not enough.

For non-USB-C adapters, use the laptop maker’s approved voltage, polarity, connector, identification protocol where applicable, and current capacity. A physically fitting plug with the wrong electrical specification can damage equipment.

Under load

A charger can be compatible and still be slower than the original.

A lower-power supported USB-C charger may work for light use but charge slowly or lose battery percentage during heavy CPU/GPU load. That does not automatically mean the charger is faulty. Compare the source with the laptop’s documented full-power requirement and the mode you are using.

Decision

What should you buy?

USB-C laptop

Choose a reputable USB Power Delivery charger that supports the exact output profile/wattage your laptop requires, plus a cable rated for that power.

Proprietary/barrel laptop

Use the manufacturer-supported adapter or a replacement explicitly documented as compatible with the exact model.

Docked laptop

Check the dock’s maximum power delivered to the host, not only the wattage of the charger plugged into the dock.
