Step 01

Start with the exact model, not “Govee lights” in general.

Govee sells Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Matter, and mixed-connectivity products. Many Wi-Fi strip lights use 2.4 GHz, but do not apply that statement blindly to every current Govee device. Use the model’s product page or support entry to confirm the supported network and setup path.

Step 02

Build a simple 2.4 GHz test when the model requires it.

Move the phone and light closer to the access point, verify the password, and confirm the 2.4 GHz radio is enabled. A combined 2.4/5 GHz SSID can work with 2.4-only devices, but if setup fails Govee’s support guidance recommends trying separate band names or another 2.4 GHz network.

Do not describe this as the router “forcing” a 2.4-only light onto 5 GHz. The light does not have a 5 GHz radio if the model is 2.4-only.

Step 03

Give the app only the permissions the current setup flow requests.

Bluetooth, Nearby Devices, Location, and Local Network permissions differ by mobile OS version and by setup method. Follow the current Govee Home prompts and your phone’s privacy settings. If you previously denied a required permission, re-enable it and restart the setup flow.

Step 04

Remove router policy as a variable.

  • Confirm the password and security mode are supported by the device.
  • Temporarily disable MAC-address filtering or access-control rules that block new clients.
  • Avoid client-isolation rules during setup if the phone must discover the device locally.
  • Use Govee’s alternate-network or hotspot test when documented for the model.

If the light joins another supported network but not your home network, focus on router configuration. If it cannot join any supported network after the model-specific reset procedure, product support becomes the next step.

Step 05

Reset only with the procedure for your exact controller.

Govee publishes reset sequences for different products, but they are not universal. Do not copy a button-press sequence from another strip model simply because the controller looks similar. Use the manual or support entry attached to the model number.

Decision

Do you need new hardware?

No

If the light works on a supported alternate network, fix the home Wi-Fi configuration.

Maybe

If setup fails only from one phone, test another supported phone or reinstall/update Govee Home before replacing the light.

Support / replacement

If the exact reset procedure completes but the light cannot be discovered or join a supported network from multiple phones/networks, contact Govee with the model and firmware/app details.
